North Carolina native, General Hugh Shelton, served as Chairman for the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1997-2001. Before retiring in October 2001, General Shelton utilized his last few weeks as Chairman to help the United States military take down Al-Qaeda and the Taliban. In 2002, President George W. Bush awarded General Shelton with the Congressional Gold Medal, recognizing his 38 years of military service. In 1999, General Shelton spoke under The Jesse Helms Center Lecture Series at Wingate University.
