Never before seen Concession Speech featured in Charlotte Observer

On November 7, 1972, Jesse Helms won his first of five U.S. Senate elections. That evening he handed his driver, Patrick Reilly, two speeches – one a victory speech and one a concession speech. Last year, Mr. Reilly gave the concession speech he had saved all these year to the Helms Center Archives. We contacted the Charlotte Observer about this previously unknown piece of history and they ran a story that can be read here: http://www.charlotteobserver.com/news/politics-government/article182500131.html.

You can view the concession speech in the Online Exhibits on our website.
