Annual Free Enterprise Leadership Challenge a Great Success |

 In June, the Helms Center welcomed over 190 students (from five states and four countries) for our annual Free Enterprise Leadership Challenge (FELC), a five-day residential summer program for high school students that teaches the basics of capitalism, free enterprise and economics to rising entrepreneurs.
Almost 300 applications were received for this year’s program which was hosted in two sessions (June 20 – 24 and June 27 – July 1) on the campus of Wingate University. When students arrived on the first day they were quickly introduced to the idea of free enterprise and were broken into small groups that we called companies. Each company worked directly with their own consultant (counselor) to make their company a reality. They were tasked with providing a product or service to other program participants. But that wasn’t their only challenge. They also wrote business and marketing plans, made commercials, elected officers and kept accounting records. The company start-up activity was supplemented with daily speakers who provided their unique life and business stories, while discussing the threats to free enterprise, the importance of protecting capitalism and the value of giving back.
Speakers during the 2010 FELC sessions included Senator Helms’ daughter Mrs. Nancy Helms Grigg, President of The Moser Group and former Helms Center board member Mr. Dennis Moser, President of New American Mortgage and former NFL player Mr. Casey Crawford, Director of the BB&T Program on the Moral Foundations of Free Enterprise at Wingate Univesity Dr. Peter Frank, State Farm Insurance Agent Mr. Brent Collins, Vice-President of Industrial Brokerage at Southern Real Estate and Vietnam War P.O.W. Mr. Quincy Collins, Autumn Care Nursing Home Administrator Mr. Jonathan Thomas, and President of Johnson Insurance Management Mr. Todd Johnson.
During the week, students also participated in a variety of other events including a debate that was designed to get them thinking critically about the current events that threaten our basic freedoms. A speech contest was also held where 24 students addressed the following question: “Who ultimately is responsible for the BP oil spill, the government or the private sector?” Additionally, students completed a virtual trade mission, exporting a product to another country and completing all the research to prove why it would be a successful venture. And, students explored important values and characteristics through writing Laws of Life essays. Individual winners were chosen for the speech and essay contest, and company winners were chosen based on overall performance. Between both sessions, students boasted net profit earnings of $1,685. Students were allowed to choose the fate of their profits – keep their earnings and share among company members or donate everything to the online microfinance lender Kiva.org. Proudly 100% of earnings were donated to Kiva, where the money earned will help spread the message of free enterprise in developing countries.
At the closing ceremony students received copies of Senator Helms’ book Here’s Where I Stand, a pocket-seized version of the Constitution and Henry Hazlitt’s Economics in One Lesson. The feedback we received from parents of participants and the participants themselves was powerful and reminded us that capitalism is alive and well – we simply have to continue telling young people about it and make sure they actively get involved in the system.
