 '80s takeover guru
keeps his eyes on energy

A Time magazine cover from 1985 pictures T. Boone Pickens, one of the original corporate takeover artists, holding the fanned cards of a poker hand. The Dallas oilman had just tried to buy Gulf Oil as part of a series of takeover bids that brought him fame, celebrity and even talk of a presidential bid. The headline read: "The Takeover Game."
Takeover bids are now commonplace, and the 78-year-old billionaire might seem a throwback to that heady Wall Street era. But his hedge fund BP Capital Management has been wildly profitable.
He made $1.5 billion in 2005. His most recent tax bill equaled 90 percent of all the taxes he paid before he turned 70, he told the Observer on Wednesday.
His point? He's still in the game, investing almost exclusively in the energy industry. He was in the Charlotte area as part of the Jesse Helms Lecture Series at Wingate University.
Forbes listed him last year as 103rd richest person in the country and 512th in the world.
A conservative and financial supporter of President Bush's 2004 campaign, Pickens said he supports former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani for president.
He predicts higher oil prices by the end of the year, and a greater reliance on green power. His fund invests in ethanol production and solar and wind technology. And he's been buying up the rights to another limited resource in Texas, water.
The Observer spoke to Pickens on Wednesday after he took part in a question and answer session at Wingate. His answers were edited for length and clarity.
Q. The private equity firm KKR, run by Henry Kravis, just offered $44 million to stockholders for TXU Energy (Texas' largest utility). Are you involved? Does this surprise you? Is this the future?
We're not involved, but we have seen the deal. There are other groups looking at coming into the bidding for TXU. I always believe the shareholders know best. I don't see it as something to be afraid of. It's not going to happen real fast throughout the industry. But I think it will come out good for the shareholders, and I think it will probably be good for the consumer, too.
Q. What has changed most about the energy industry since 1985?
The industry has really consolidated, and the reason is because we've peaked in worldwide oil production at 85 million barrels a day. There isn't an opportunity for these companies to grow by the drill bit anymore. ... Fast forward to the fourth quarter this year and oil demand will be 86 million barrels. That's going to be a tough spot. The price will go up and demand will go down.
Q. How will that extra demand change the market?
Y
ou absorb it. There will be alternatives that come into the market. There's no cure-all, but there's ethanol, and we'll see solar get a place in the market and also wind. Natural gas over time will move out of power generation and become a transportation fuel. There will be cleaner coal, and we'll go to nuclear. I don't think it'll be a crisis. It won't be a runaway oil price.
Q. What has changed most on Wall Street since 1985?
Corporate America has changed. What was unusual in 1985 is commonplace now. If you have a company, and its assets are worth more than the market cap or the price of the stock, then private equity is going to look at you. KKR with its huge pockets can look at $44 billion. (Back in 1985), it wasn't acceptable; it just wasn't understood. But if the shareholders own the company, they should be the ones to make the decision.
