The Jesse Helms Center was proud to collect 2,692 Operation Chirstmas Child boxes for 2006. The following article was recently printed in the Charlotte Observer.

Monroe sends out Christmas gifts for over 5,700 children
MARTY MINCHIN

MONROE - A large moving truck about three-fourths full with cardboard boxes labeled "SAMARITAN'S PURSE" pulled out of Monroe on Tuesday.

Inside were Christmas gifts for more than 5,700 children.

The stacks of plastic boxes and shoe boxes filled with gifts for children around the world were donated by churches and individuals from Union County and the surrounding areas.

Each box, part of Samaritan's Purse's annual Operation Christmas Child, will go to a boy or girl who likely will find great joy in gifts small enough to fit in a shoe box.

I spent part of Sunday afternoon at the Union Baptist Association in Monroe, a new collection center this year for Operation Christmas Child. Volunteers unloaded a small moving truck full of boxes donated by churches in Rockingham and collected donations from local groups.

"People are delighted to do this for the children," said Jean Rollins, Union Baptist Association administrative assistant. "It's a wonderful ministry project. It just provides a smile, and it spreads God's word to remote areas."

It's about people

Last week, volunteers at the Jesse Helms Center and at First Baptist Church of Indian Trail also collected thousands of Operation Christmas Child boxes and loaded them on trucks bound for a processing center in Charlotte. The stories behind the people who bring the boxes are part of what makes this massive ministry project so interesting.

LaDonna Snodgrass, museum store manager for the Jesse Helms Center, said one church from South Carolina brought 534 boxes. The church's congregation has 80 members.

Last year, this church's goal was 300 boxes, Snodgrass said. They upped that to 500 this year, asking members to bring in one type of item, such as school supplies or hygiene items, each month this year.

Snodgrass said one lady, who's 84 and lives in the Marshville area, brings boxes every year. She, too, collects her items early, and this year she brought in 51 boxes.

The donors range from schoolchildren to sorority sisters to civic groups. Many of the large donations come from churches that make Operation Christmas Child, a congregationwide ministry.

Metrolina Christian Academy's elementary school donated 300 boxes, said Cinda Gatrell, a volunteer with First Baptist Church of Indian Trail. She said the schoolchildren pray for each box and for the child who will receive it.

Groups have brought boxes in pickups, church vans and SUVs.

"It's amazing how many boxes can fit (in a vehicle)," Gatrell said. "A Chevy Blazer will pull up, and they'll have 350 boxes in there."

It's a ministry

The Operation Christmas Child boxes are not only gifts for needy children, but also evangelistic tools.

The boxes contain toys (Rollins said items such as yo-yos are popular), hygiene items such as soap and washcloths, school supplies and hard candy.

Some children who assemble the boxes go an extra step, decorating the outside of the boxes and writing a note to the child who will receive the box. The outside of each box is labeled with "boy" or "girl" and an age category ranging from 2-14.

Children who receive the boxes also will get a color booklet that tells the story of Jesus. The booklets are printed in 72 languages.

"In the video we've seen of years' past distributions, the children first of all see the book, and when they lay that book aside and look at their gifts, the parents look at the book," Rollins said. "It is definitely an evangelistic ministry to reach the world and the children."

The children who receive the gifts often are refugees of war, survivors of natural disasters or living in extreme poverty.

Greater response

Gatrell said the excitement and interest in Operation Christmas Child seems to grow every year, and she attributes this year's big response in part to increased advertising and awareness. She said more donations came in from the Indian Trail area than she's seen before, and some churches and organizations that brought boxes last year doubled their box count this year.

"There was an amazing response this year," Gatrell said. "We had so many more individuals (who brought boxes), some just people who had heard on the radio.

"It was wonderful."

Volunteers from across Union County also came out to help box up and load the donations, including students from Wingate University and Union County high school students.

The work still isn't over for some volunteers. The Union Baptist Association will take a group of youth from area churches to Charlotte in early December to help go through individual boxes and check for inappropriate items such as chocolate, medications and war-related items.

"The vastness of this project is unbelievable," Rollins said.
