On Thursday, November 3, the Jesse Helms Center will host a luncheon featuring former White House Aide and current Focus on the Family VP Timothy Goeglein at Rolling Hills County Club in Monroe, North Carolina. Goeglein will speak about the role of faith in politics. The cost of the luncheon is $20. To reserve your tickets for this event, please register here or call (704) 233-1776, ext. 2
About Timothy Goeglein: Timothy Goeglein first joined the Bush administration in September 2000. He served as a special advisor to the President and Deputy Director of Public Liaison until February 2008. In 2009, he joined the staff of Focus on the Family as the Vice President for External Relations. His new book "The Man in the Middle" chronicles his life during the Bush administration. Goeglein was one of President Bush’s longest-serving aides, providing a true insider’s look at how religious faith informed and guided a presidency and a nation. Unlike other accounts of the political and policy decisions of the Bush White House released in the years since Bush left office, The Man in the Middle explores in a personal way how the president’s faith – the most important aspect of his life – impacted the decisions he made and how he governed. In his foreword, former White House advisor Karl Rove calls The Man in the Middle “a chronicle worth writing and one well worth reading.” |

The Free Enterprise Leadership Challenge was established in 1995 to help educate students about the opportunities available to them within the free enterprise system. Each summer, hundreds of high school students participate in this exciting program.
A company competition is the core activity of the week. In small groups, students form companies to provide actual services and products for other members of the camp. Rather than using "fake" money, students borrow from the FELC bank to get their companies started, and they are expected to turn a profit during the week. With guided instruction, students work together to create business plans, market their companies, pay taxes and maintain accounting records. The company who works the hardest turns the biggest profit during the week. Every company decides the fate of their profits. Proudly, 95% of the companies in FELC history have donated their proceeds to charity.
Community and business leaders serve as daily speakers to motivate, encourage and lend sound advice. Top participants are presented with opportunities for college scholarships and international travel. All of these activities are designed to keep students actively involved. Hands-on, experiential learning is the goal of these activities! We expect good attitudes, positive behavior and plenty of effort during all activities.
Students who will be sophomores (10th grade), juniors (11th grade) or seniors (12th grade) by the start of the traditional school year and have demonstrated leadership potential and/or an interest in the free market system are encouraged to apply. For consideration, each student must submit a completed application, a personal statement and list a reference. Students are primarily accepted into the program based on their interest and intent (however GPA, references and extracurricular activities allow us to get a better understanding of the applicant if the statement is inconclusive).
For questions, please contact Lindsay Hollandsworth, FELC Coordinator, at (704) 233-1776 ext 8. |

Through historic footage and one-of-a-kind interviews, The Singing Revolution tells the powerful story of Estonia’s peaceful path to freedom. In 1991, hundreds of thousands of Estonians gathered to sing forbidden patriot songs, defying decades of Soviet occupation. Their compelling and forceful songs led to their independence, and their charge helped herald the collapse of the Soviet Union. The late Nobel Laureate and economist Milton Friedman called the movie a wonderful film and said that it will “unquestionably have the effect of strengthening the belief in freedom on the part of anybody who watches it.” "The Singing Revolution" has been screened across the country and received several awards including the “Most Inspirational Film” in the 2008 Boulder International Film Festival and “Best Documentary” in the 2007 Savannah Film Festival.

Please join us for the Rocky Mount screening of "The Call of the Entrepreneur."
“The Call of the Entrepreneur” is an hour long documentary that focuses on the lives of three entrepreneurs – a dairy farmer, a merchant banker, and a refugee from communist China. The film examines the drive behind what these people do: Why are they driven to create wealth? Why do they produce? Who does it benefit?
Why do their stories matter? Because how we view entrepreneurs - as greedy or altruistic, as virtuous or vicious - shapes the destinies of individuals and nations.
The documentary captures the very essence of the entrepreneur and how by their ingenuity and vision, they create wealth for the world.
A panel discussion will immediately follow the screening. Panel members include John Dodd, president of the Jesse Helms Center, John Hood, president of the John Locke Foundation, and G.D. Gearino, author and former News & Observer columnist and business editor.
